Why Windows struggles with HEIC
HEIC is Apple's format, and while Windows 10 and 11 can display it after you install a paid codec from the Microsoft Store, many Windows apps still won't touch it — old Office versions, image editors, and web upload forms all reject HEIC.
Converting to JPG sidesteps every compatibility problem at once.
The no-install method (recommended)

Method 2: Microsoft Store HEIF codec
Search the Microsoft Store for 'HEIF Image Extensions' (free) or 'HEVC Video Extensions' (paid). Once installed, the built-in Photos app can open HEIC files.
This lets you view files, but to actually convert them you'll still need Paint (one at a time, painful for batches) or the browser converter above.
