Add a caption to a photo

Drop a photo, type a caption, and place it in one of nine spots, corner, edge or dead centre. The text is drawn with an outline so it stays legible over a busy background, and nothing about the photo leaves your device.

Nine positions, one caption

Top, middle or bottom, paired with left, centre or right, covers every spot a caption actually gets used for: a name badge in a corner, a title banner across the top, a watermark-style label along the bottom edge. Pick a cell in the grid and the text lands there.

Why the text always has an outline

A caption in plain white text disappears over a bright sky, and plain black text disappears over a dark background. So every caption here gets a thin outline in the opposite tone, white text with a black outline, or black text with a white one, so it reads clearly no matter what's behind it.

Size is adjustable too, a small label in a corner needs a different scale than a title banner across the top of the frame.

Nothing is uploaded

The photo is decoded in your browser tab, the caption is drawn directly onto a canvas, and the result is encoded back into a file you download. No server sees the photo or the text at any point.

Disconnect from the internet after this page loads and it still works, because everything the tool needs is already in the tab.

When you'd use this

Adding a name or date to a printed photo before framing it. Labelling a before-and-after pair for a listing or a portfolio. Putting a short credit line in a corner before sharing a photo publicly. Marking up a screenshot with a one-line caption before sending it along.

Quick questions

Can I use more than nine positions?

The grid covers three vertical bands, top, middle, bottom, crossed with three horizontal bands, left, centre, right. That's every corner, every edge midpoint, and dead centre, which covers where a caption actually goes.

Why does the text always have an outline?

So it stays readable regardless of what's behind it. A caption without an outline can vanish into a bright sky or a dark shadow depending on where it lands, the outline is always the opposite tone from the fill so there's always contrast.

Can I only use white or black text?

Yes, by design. Those two, each with an outline in the other tone, cover legibility over any background. A colour picker would let someone choose a caption that blends into the photo instead of standing out from it.

Is my photo uploaded to add the caption?

No. Everything happens in your browser, the photo is never sent anywhere. Disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Can I caption several photos at once?

Yes, up to 200 per batch. The same caption, position, size and colour are applied to every photo you drop.
